The first book is basically about finding out what is going on with the attacks along the border of their kingdoms, and trying to figure out why and who is causing them. Along with the fact the Kalunesh Empire of the alfs is seeking the Kalunesh not born of Kalunesh to restore their people and lead the fight against the return of the Dark Gods and their servants as according to their ancient prophecy given to them by the Gods of Light. Which basically states that the Dark Gods and their servants shall return from the shadows and bring the world into a Third and Final War Against the Darkness, and only the reincarnated soul of their great alf hero, Keiken, can lead them in victory. Thus for thousands of years they have been awaiting the return of Keiken, who the prophecy calls the Kalunesh not born of Kalunesh. Not sure if that clears anything up or not.
