It All Starts With What You Like
To find other highly compatible Otaku, we first need to know about you. We already know that you're an Otaku, so you're interests already match several others on the site. But we dig deeper than that to figure out what you're really interested in, because even though we all like the same things, we are all different.
We start by giving you the chance to fill out a simple profile, because that's obvious how anyone is going to find you. Then you progress to our match system, where we ask several questions about you - most of which are related to anime. We believe what you tell us about the kind of anime you like will help us get to know you just like any other Otaku would want. If we're matching you because you like anime and Japanese culture, then we want to be sure you hit it off right with someone who likes the same aspects as you.
Our unique software develops a one-of-a-kind personality and interests analysis for you. We then find other Otaku, starting with those nearest to you, that have the same interests and a compatible overall personality. You can view the profiles of compatible Otaku, and even message them or leave comments for free. We have a growing, inclusive community, and you'll be welcomed right away.

MaiOtaku was developed by anime fans, not by some mega corporation. We build our own software, manage our own servers, and watch lots of anime. Ryan Kopf began MaiOtaku in 2009, and still runs things today.

What is MaiOtaku?
MaiOtaku is a fan made website for anime fans, mixing both a social network and a dating website. Some users come here just to make friends, while others are looking for dates. With our cosplay picture galleries, profiles, comments, and messages we think we are a great place to make friends, and our matching program makes us a great place to find Otaku that might be interested in a relationship.
How much does MaiOtaku cost?
Most everything you'll need is completely free. You can contact other users via comments and messages, upload pictures, and view your matches without paying anything. We try to make money to keep up with our costs (mostly advertising right now) by asking some users to pay $3.50 a month to get
extra benefits.
Our matching system is very unique, designed from scratch. We ask a few questions about your anime interest, and we will add more later. We then match you with other Otaku based on your answers, age, and location, in hopes that you can easily find someone near you.
What are the picture gallery limits?
At the moment there is no limit to the number of picture galleries or photos you can share. Free members might eventually be limited to 15-30 pictures, while premium users can have many more. We haven't decided for certain, yet, if we will limit your picture sharing, though. Cosplay pictures are highly appreciated!
What features are in progress?
We have a lot of ideas, and we're trying to see what fits best with what we currently have. We're currently upgrading our anime database and matching systems.
What makes MaiOtaku better?
We're new, fresh, and visionary. We use the latest technology, too. Our website is built on a really awesome framework that sometimes makes interacting with the website fun. It also doesn't cost to contact other Otaku and become part of our community.
What if I lost my password?
Use our new
lost password recovery form. After entering your login and email address, we will email a new password to your email address as long as it is the same address that you signed up with.
We haven't finished this part yet, so you'll still get emails when someone leaves a comment on your profile or sends you a message. We want to let you have options like weekly-only emails, etc, but it takes a lot of code to do that. If you don't want to get anymore emails, you can change your email address to a non-existant one in your account settings. Be warned you won't be able to get password recovery emails then.
What are the benefits of a premium account?
There are several, most are listed on our
page about premium accounts. Premium members see more highlights in their matching lists, appear in bold in matches, get to upload tons more pictures, and a lot more.
Some states don't have a lot of membership yet. You could help by posting in local forums about the site, or adding it to your signature, for example. Also we don't list users that haven't uploaded a picture in some parts of the site, so it seems like there are less users there. If you are looking through your matching list, but someone doesn't show up that you expect, then it's likely that their preferences don't match yours.
Is MaiOtaku safe?
It's is safe as we can make it, but you must take precautions yourself. We delete any harassing comments or messages that we find, and watch for dangerous behavior. You, however, must take care to protect your information to the extent you see fit. While websites such as Facebook and MySpace make it already very likely that information like your city and state are available to the public, it's still important to consider the information you post publicly. If you want to share private information with individual members of the website that you trust, we have a private messaging system.
Does MaiOtaku sell my information?
Nope. We take pride in keeping your information secure (remember, any information on your profile is visible to the public). We won't give, rent, sell, trade, or do anything of the sort with your personal information.
How do I use the anime/manga database?
Login and go to the anime section to be able to search for anime you have watched, or are planning to watch. Type a word or two of the title of what you are looking for in the search box and results should show up in moments. You can add it to your collection with the add button.
Can I work for MaiOtaku?
MaiOtaku does not have any paid staff members, and we don't plan on hiring in 2010. Any income we make goes towards attending conventions and promoting MaiOtaku. However, we are looking for dedicated volunteers to update our Animanga and Convention databases. Feel free to
apply.
We understand that you might meet someone, either here or in real life. While we encourage you to keep your account and continue making friends (since it's not entirely about dating), you can have your account deleted by contacting us. We can't, yet, fully delete an account, but we can remove all your personal information and pictures and lock the account.
Contact us and include your username, and the email address that you signed up with.
