"unique" manga

dalton
I have always been interested in manga that aren't typically mainstream, that depict things that we normally do not see in manga such as the manga Real Clothes, Beck: Mongolian Chop Squad, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzimaya (technically light novel but fuck it), and Hikaru no Go. While these ones are relatively popular it's the non mainstream approach to plot I enjoy. While saying this, I love Shonen manga so this is an idea I have not refined at all. Shounen manga about Magicians. Think One Piece plus magic Kaito. A story where a main character fights using magic tricks against magicians and sorcerers alike. Would this be an interesting idea to expand upon?

Id say it depends on how you handle it. Any idea can be made into an interesting story, it all depends on the writer skill. Take Onanie Master Kurosawa for example. The story is great and yet it's about a kid masturbating in the girls bathroom... More particularly, you'd have to come up with fresh tricks and interesting ways in which to put them to use.

"The story is great and yet it's about a kid masturbating in the girls bathroom..." I've done that before when I was in high school, also with girl's panties found in clothing for a sale in the school basement. Though you probably didn't want to know all that about me....lol

I'm currently reading Drifters, by Kouta Hirano of Hellsing fame. As well as Triage X by Shouji Sato, who did the artwork for HOTD. I find them both to be really good, dumb, action fun.

Sorry, forgot to explain anything. Basically, they have some relatively common concepts, but expand on them with a distinct sense of "flavor". Both writers are really good at injecting slack, slapstick style humor into an otherwise over the top serious manga. This is why so much anime can seem so repetitive but still attains recogognition. A good manga/anime is well balanced, even if some things seem unoriginal, overdone, or just plain silly. Think Madoka Magica.
