Weeding Out Catfish

Online dating is already troublesome, but catfish can make it a lot worse. If you don't know what a catfish is: it's a person online that pretends to be someone they're not by using another person's pictures and making a fake profile/persona out of them. When you're dating online here are some things to look out for: 1. They look a little too nice in their pictures 2. They don't have very many pictures of themselves (a few or less) 3. They either don't have Skype or refuse to 4. They start to contradict themselves about their personal details 5. Refuse to talk on the phone 6. Has a foreign phone number (if they say they live in the same country as you) 7. Doesn't want to meet-up IRL If I'm missing any please list them below. Do you guys have any experiences with catfish? What would you do if you suspect someone of being a catfish? I'd like to know.

I've met some catfish that specifically wanted to use Skype, and a few automated ones that would find me on there too. I don't think it's unreasonable for people not to want to meet with strangers they may not know too well. I met a girl here who really wanted to meet after only knowing them for like a week but wasn't something I was comfortable doing at that point in time. I'd add in asking for money/gifts or trying to lure you to a site you've never heard of before.

Now that we are here, I agree with neet in the not wanting to meet part, but I'd have to also ask if, when on Skype, is it difficult for them to catfish a video call? Because that'd seriously be scary. I, sometimes, even ask myself if people see me as a catfish too. Yet, you never know. Is good to be careful. Sometimes you can easily tell they are by just searching the images on the net, sometimes not if they use someone close to them as reference. I never am truly scared of this given the place I live, would be stupid for anyone outside the country to do this to me, still, one should be very wary of these stuff all the time.

I've been catfished, such a crappy feeling. If they do it right it can be hard to tell for a pretty decent amount of time.
