They are not dead, most just are hard to maintain. Especially when you get into large groups that do calls and only 4 out of like 30 people choose to speak. That can be pretty lame i mean it is Skype after all. But alas They are still alive just on life support.

iCy: http://www.hongkiat.com/blog/team-chat-tools/ There's also ventrilo, mumble, teamspeak, raidcall, Curse Voice, and Discord. Skype is better for one on one chating with friends and family, but not so much group activities.
