Original Character discussion

princessplanchette
My friend and I are really into making OC's and we had a discussion about roleplay sites. My friend brought up the topic about how since I roleplay all the time, there seems to be no roleplay site for Original characters. It seems to only be fandom based characters/fandom based OC's. I'm really into writing and have various books on writing/character development. Id love to talk to other people about my characters/my development/my art for them but can't find anyone to discuss things with. Do any of you like making OC's that are NOT fandom based? Is it hard for you to find people who share the same enthusiasm?

Yes! It is easier to make role playing sites about established characters because everyone knows more or less what to expect from each character. OCs make that a little tougher. But as a writer I fawn over my OCs. It is a little tricky to find people willing to discuss their OCs because they are so precious to us. How many do you have?

I can agree with you there, I just wish that there was a site dedicated to OC roleplay Funny you ask! Right now I'm in a stage of weeding out the OC's I don't use as often I am also re-vaming a few and going through OC notes that I have written on paper As of now, I have at least more than 11

Since the bit I'm working on now is set in the military, I must shamefully admit to easily 20+. Ships need captains, bases need commanders. There are about 5 main characters, maybe a dozen major characters and the rest are side characters. Trivia: The oldest characters I have are all main characters. IRL their ages range from about 10 to 15. Talk about having an idea in your head for a while. lol

The only thing is that the OC's can differ depending on the "world" in which they are displayed in. If its a fantasy setting, they could have from superpowers to magic power. If it is realistic setting, you have from regular civilians to military and their counterparts. The problem with role playing OC's is the setting, if a setting, time period and limitations are set in stone. Only then can you develop the OC for that specific world/setting, because otherwise just like in games, you have the off chance of finding a character that is OP. @Jinsei Right now I am finally writing down a story I have been .. building up ... since 14 years ago. If all goes right I should be able to make 3 stories :) and I love making things complicated. Whenever I finish my stories I like that the reader never saw the ending coming.

@Boundbyluck Hell, even I don't see some of my endings coming! When your story's all good and ready lemmie know. I'll buy two! One of the things I hope will keep people interested in my writing is the character interaction. I've always been intrigued and entertained by the back and forth between people in the world around me. At work, sometimes I'll just be a fly on the wall and laugh at the banter from a group of coworkers. I wanna capture that as best I can so people experiencing my story will be drawn to certain characters and continue to follow them to see what kind of fight 'guy a' will get into with 'guy b'.

@ jinsei In my case I go for characters that a person can relate to. But for my stories I like to make them in a way that makes people think differently. That not everything is set in stone (like my stories turning out different to what you expect by the end). and sure ill let you know. Where do you post your stories btw, or have you never posted them online?

@Boundbyluck As of yet I have not. Like many an artist I'm rather self critical. Only recently have I been leaking bits and pieces to friends and family to get their feed back. But coming pretty soon I'm gonna start dropping excerpts online too. At a con not to long ago, there was a panel where the topic of character creation came up. In particular someone wanted to know if there was a correct time and place to use "flat" characters. Thoughts?
boundbyluck
What do you mean by "flat" characters?
fancycosplayer6
Flat... Wait you don't mean... >.<
