It may seem simplistic, but this anime goes places where anime nowadays are afraid to tread. Exploring character trauma, environmentalism, self defense, sacrifice, and what it truly takes to carve out a living when you're stranded, galaxies away from civilization. Based on a japanese fantasy novel (Not light novel, but an actual novel), the story follows a pair of royal twins on the run, who are saved by a leopard headed warrior. This anime has some very old-school gen x Swords and Sorcery vibes. We're talking Conan the Barbarian, Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser, and Elric of Melnibone vibes. To be an optimist is to be at war with reality. Hanasaku Iroha tells a very human story about adolescence, angst, frustration, grit, and determination. About an odd ball named Ohana who's deadbeat mom plucks her from the city and tosses her out into the country to work at your grandmother's onsen hotel over the summer. The comedy, the drama, and the character writing and developement all feel very natural. And often times, its the most subtle moments that hit the hardest. Here's a box of digital tissues.
