Hi, Ronined. No worries about the long post; I think I've got you beat. XD
I understand that times are changing, but in my experience and what I have gleaned from observation, the idea of having/needing a mate is something all kids grow up with and always will in one way or another. It's a natural thing. Even with all the breaking of glass ceilings and whatnot, I doubt there will be a real change in the way kids are raised to think of themselves and others in terms of destiny. Music and TV will always tell us that unless you have a partner, you're not the hero or the main character or even a side character. You're an extra, an NPC; In other words, nobody that will ever matter. Why? Because it simply makes a good story. Nobody wants to hear the epic of "Forever Alone".
Please understand -- I'm just saying it's a fact of life, a necessary evil, if you will, that isn't necessarily always an evil. I'm not saying do away with it - that's madness - I'm just stating that it's there. My post was intended to explain why so many people feel empty and useless when they're single. The answer: It's an ideal we grow up with, regardless of which time period one lives in.
As for the resilience of gender stereotyping, all you need to do is look at the Nerf Rebelle products/commercials, haha. They're actually quite funny, sort of. Might I add that the products are called things like "Heartbreaker" and "Sweet Revenge", a throwback to what I said about relationship stereotyping and its presence in pretty much everything we do, from the time we're kids to the moment we die.
