When did Anime become 'weird' in society's eyes?

talamar
At Kane: I am a die hard otaku. Iwas not insulting you. I was saying what the uninformed masses think. Not what I thought. I have watch anime for 30 years and still watching. But a lot of society feels the way I stated. Not me. I cosplay, watch anime, read manga,, play games, and love the asian culture. So I would jever insult people who feel same way.

Didn't we have this talk in another thread? "Otaku Stereotypes" Anime is played regularly on tv to where people think it's just another type of animtion type, which it is. I know plenty of people who know what anime is but they don't know any titles, other then Poke'mon and they still think that's an american made cartoon.

I think it depends on where you live. At my high school the ''cool kids'' also watched some anime and I'm not talking about Naruto but things like Claymore and Azumanga. At university there are also people who watch it and are very sociable. I think it depends on who you talk to and if you also enjoy things besides anime and manga. In my experience well educated people generally don't find it weird.

@rokuro. That is not true. Anime is Japanese. Japanese people started creating their own cartoons influenced on western styles, but in 1930 they decided that they would incorporate their own art skills in therefore making it anime. The only idea they to from the west is to make it a show on tv. That is it. They produced many works for western countries in the early 1900s so if anything the west used their help. Also watching anime is not wierd in Japan but the idea that people become anime otakus, for those who don't know in japan the word otaku only means mania, so just saying otaku doesn't make since. Anyway anime otakus tend to not bath eat and be over weight, therefore not giving regard to their own body. That's what the Japanese think is wierd. Not anime it's self.

well ill admit it does make the Japanese seem weird in foreigners eyes (even I see them as odd and I love anime) and that's y the Japanese hate it and otakus, cuz they make japan look bad in there eyes as for America its more fear what u don't understand then fear the unknown, goes for all kinda of geekery and oddity's

This may just be me but I don't know when watching anime was ever cool let alone when it started to "become weird" I've been made fun of for most of my life for liking anime. Just like I was made fun of for liking comics, videogames and Star Wars. The only difference is all that other stuff is "cool" now which kind of pisses me off after being teased about it so much. I don't know why anime and manga are weird and "just for kids" but I'm sort of glad because I don't want to be part of the hip crowd, not after the ridicule I had to put up with. I'd rather keep being the weirdo. The fact that we're here shows that we don't watch anime and read manga because it's cool and because everyone else does it. We're here because we love it. I raise my glass and toast out camaraderie in geekdom haha.

Not many of my friends would know or care if I liked anime. Outside of that, my sister likes it so that's a bonus. As far as society is concerned, they are free to think what they want. I don't have to hide my affinity for anime but nor is it really on display.

I think it was when they realize all the hentai and ecchi anime/manga there is They categorize it as porn which it is but still to each their own

Most people I know now adays don't have an issue with anime. If they do its because they only think of Big jiggly boobed anime girls from ecchi/henta. So basically what wallace said lol.

Well it's like anything you don't understand as a person I would have prejudge something I have not interacted with or fully understood its concept. Since I like it I have come to understand it and even learned from it sometimes valuable lessons that I could have learned in some other way or would have never come across with So like I tell people don't judge until you try but let's keep it within reason
