Promises

“How are you feeling?” A girl in a white dress asked him. She seemed to be dressed up as if she wanted to look beautiful for someone. “I’m… fine, heh. I wonder how you’re doing.” The man in the hospital bed replied. He had a sorrowful look on his face, as he looked down into the hospital bed sheets. “Don’t worry about me; I can take care of myself. Besides, you were the one that got hurt, not me.” She gave him a stern look. “Ohhh.” He looked up at her, but it seemed like he was looking through her, instead of at her. “I’m sorry I couldn’t protect you.” He looked back down. “What? Protect me? From what? I wasn’t-” “I couldn’t protect you from the accident! Now you’re dead!” he starts to cry. “What are you talking about? I’m not dead!” She raised her arm as if to slap him, but then lowered it. “I promised you that I would protect you, that we would stay together forever and that I would be the first to die! Why!? Why did you make me break my promise!?” He clutches his hand towards his shirt where his heart is. “I need to meet her… I need to go with her!”

“Are you crazy?! Don’t do that!” She slapped him in the face as hard as she could, but to no avail. He didn’t feel anything, and she didn’t even touch him. “I’ll find something… yeah. This is a hospital; there must be a knife or something sharp here. Don’t worry Maggie, I’ll keep that promise I made to you!” He started to look around the hospital, when he couldn’t find anything near him, he decided to get up. “Stop it! Please! I don’t want you to do this!” Once he got up, he disconnected from the last bit of life that was holding on to him. The pump that was giving him the blood he needed to survive. He slammed on the floor like a doll that was disowned. “No! Ivan!...” He lay there, motionless, no longer breathing or even attempting to.

“Boo!” A startling voice came from behind her. She turned around and saw Ivan grinning with joy and happier than ever. “I kept that promise. We’ll forever be together, death can’t even do us part.” He smiled wide. “You idiot…” She sniffed as if she was about to cry, then slapped Ivan softly, and hugged him. “I love you Ivan. I didn’t want you to kill yourself though.” Tears suddenly rolled down both of their cheeks. “I told you. I would never break a promise. If killing myself was the only solution to keeping that promise, then I’m glad I did so.” He embraced her hug and they flew off together, spirit with spirit, up into heaven. “I do have one question though; it’s been bothering me for a while.” Ivan looked at her, puzzled. “If you don’t like to break promises, then what about those promises that you made to the other people down there?” Ivan had a ghastly look on his face. “I completely forgot…”
