Teachers with guns

I am Not a Big fun guy Myself. If teachers are that worried there are alternatives that are effective too. Pulling out a fire arm usually gets someone killed and not always the person that was intented.

Guns are not the issue, it is the people behind the trigger, the reason for the gun and the sanity of the person using it. PS i also want to say that bad parenting was also a HUGE thing that caused the sandy hook shooting.

Guns are part of the Issue cause a Missed Stray shot kills someone child or cripples another teacher. Unless you are 100% sure that the Bullet is only going to hit the Intended target guns are very very dangerous. And NO ONE can make that guarantee, even the most trained marksman will tell you that.

Yes there are many factors that go into those who cause tragedies like the Sandy Hook Elementary shooting. The issue is restricting a weapon, a gun in this case, that can cause a lot of damage and death so quickly by the pull of a trigger. Even in Japan guns are heavily restricted. Only hunting rifles can be owned by a citizen and there's a lot of red tape to get it. In the USA there are heavy restricts on knifes and you don't see people bitchin' about that. In my state we are only able to have a knife on ourselves that is under 5.5" inches excluding the handle and is only a single sided blade. All other knives are ILLEGAL and cannot be even own like switchblades, ballistic knives, butterfly, double, triple, or even quadruple sided! All with the except of antique ones for collection. Knives were restricted because we aren't living in a society that has to "duel" anymore. It was design to make it a safer place and that's what gun control needs to do.

@the phoenix. I understand how you feel that these factors need to be addressed to prevent these kinds of tragedies. I love would to see the government form organizations to tackle those issues but the problem with that is it would take up TOO MUCH time and money to target at risk citizens in that direction as oppose to just having stricter gun control laws. I hate to say it but the factor most people secretly care for is money. There's money to be lost in stricter gun control including: sales, taxes, kick-backs, bribes, et cetera, et cetera. Times have changed... we need to change.

I hate when people use mental illness as a factor for gun control. There is overwhelming epidemiological evidence that the vast majority of people with psychiatric disorders do not commit violent acts. Only about 4 percent of violence in the United States can be attributed to people with mental illness. This does not mean that mental illness is not a risk factor for violence. It is, but the risk is actually small. Only certain serious psychiatric illnesses are linked to an increased risk of violence. It’s possible that preventing people with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and other serious mental illnesses from getting guns might decrease the risk of mass killings. Even the Supreme Court, which in 2008 strongly affirmed a broad right to bear arms, at the same time endorsed prohibitions on gun ownership “by felons and the mentally ill.” But mass killings are very rare events, and because people with mental illness contribute so little to overall violence, these measures would have little impact on everyday firearm-related killings. Consider that between 2001 and 2010, there were nearly 120,000 gun-related homicides. Few were perpetrated by people with mental illness.

Currently there is not good predictive factor for who will create mass murders other than they're almost always males who tend to be but not always loners

Sorry for my rant earlier, to clear a few things up when i said "mental illness" I was referring to the more serious ones, like bipolar, schizophrenia, aintsocial personality disorder, and so on. @xueli, you are slightly mistaken in that face, prisons and jails have a decent to large number of people with emotional/mental disorders, as well as learning disabilities. PS: antisocial personality disorder is a disorder which a person acts in such as to disrupt or harm members or society as a whole. It is interchangeable/similar to Psychopath and Sociopath.

I'm not saying that there are no criminals will mental illnesses, only that they are not a significant number for violent crimes. There are many overlaying factors that elevate the statistical likelihood for someone who is mentally ill to become violent like substance abuse (although it could be said that substance abuse increases everyone's likelihood to become violent). Focusing on mental illness isn't a solution to lowering violent episodes. There's not enough studies and information done to really start making legislation on gun control. Even with the Sandy Hook shooting, no one knows the mentality or motive the shooter had for doing what he did because it's still an ongoing investigation. I don't believe in denying a person's rights as currently laid in the constitution based off of stigma. In fact, people suffering from mental illness are more likely to be victims of violence. The "meta-analysis" of 21 studies between 1990 and 2010 found the odds of physical, sexual or partner violence for people with a mental illness to be almost four times higher than for adults without any disability – and far higher than for individuals with other disabilities. Also loner personality by definition doesn't automatically mean disorder
animecountryboy
Antisocial personality disorder is not about being a loner....
