Differential hardening: The differential hardening of blade is a historic method commonly used in Japan on katanas to achieve the decorative hamon line on the edge, as well as provide a hard cutting-edge with a residual springy spine. After the edges hardened, a combination of Van polishing methods, and chemical agents are used to bring out these beautiful marks. "Hamon" in Japanese translates to "badge" in english.
