Yes, it's closer than you might think, but there's a major catch. The data that neurons transmit is far too much, too fast for anything wireless. For prosthetic bionics, all the nerve wires are just that: physical wires that run from the brain to the prosthetic. Intrusive technology would be needed. Lots of fine wires/fibers inserted into the brain. Especially for something that would require essentially all sensory data, not just from a single limb. At least for the next couple of decades, it's the only feasible way, unless something major comes up technologically. Basically, you'd need to be plugged in similar to the Matrix. Naturally, there are other ways, but that's the way most realistically close to SAO that currently exists.

I've actually done some research on this, and other similar VR stuff, but it doesn't look too good. And even if we could both block the signals to the motor functions and read them without harming anything, we would still end up with a ton of lazy people who would pretty much live entirely in the game. However, from a medical standpoint, it would be more likely to be a real thing. It would be easier for the motor aspect of it, and possibly more reasonable if a surgery was needed to make the debilitated person able to experience life again.

Hey, if anyone is interested, I'd be interested in getting a team together to make an SAO themed mmorpg. Probably on Unreal or Cryengine.

Only problem being that it will be insanely expensive. Most normal people would have to save their entire life to buy the hardware, let alone the games. Even if it releases in the near future, it will be a long time before most people could afford it :(

I say we are already there if NOT very close ... because I know of the FPS feedback suit you wear to simulate getting hit in game along with VR headwear and gloves ... I think within the next 10 years or so well be there like SAO

If it is possible and in near future we all deserve a chance if those who will try and live their lives in it then so be it but one must take responsibility for their own well being and real lives and bidies such as nourishment and real exercise.
