In the year 2022, the Virtual reality Massive Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game (VRMMORPG) Sword Art Online (SAO) is released. With the Nerve Gear, a VR Helmet that stimulates the user's five senses via their brain, players can experience and control their in-game characters with their minds.

In the early 21th century, Earth came under attack from the alien Azo, who creep their influence across the globe over the course of the next few decades. That initially means little to a young Renton Thurston, however, who delights in hanging out with the sunlight-averse girl Eureka and Nirvash, a cutesy little critter who will one day grow into a transforming mecha-like being.

The series was directed by Kyoda Tomoki and is produced by Studio Bones, known for the production of many hits such as Wolf’s Rain, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Mob Psycho 100, and Boku no Hero Academia. In Japan, it is known as Psalms of the Planet: Eureka Seven, and is stylized simply as Eureka Seven internationally.

The story is set on Okinawa's isolated island of Iwado, which has seen a growing movement advocating a return to an autonomous government. Ao Fukai, a 13-year-old boy with a missing father, lives on the island with an old doctor named Toshio and is about to enter middle school.

Set in a Japan after the apocalypse in the future in 2071, the world has been almost entirely destroyed by these mysterious monsters known as the Aragami. An organization calling itself Fenrir was established to exterminate Aragami using 'God Arcs', weapons specially made from Aragami cells.

In Mikado City, a "gate" to a different world is opened suddenly one day. Monsters called "Neighbors" start appearing from it, everyone is afraid of them because Earth's weapons don't work against them, but a mysterious group starts fighting off the Neighbors.

Natsuki Subaru is an ordinary high school student who is lost in an alternate world, where he is rescued by a beautiful, silver-haired girl. He stays near her to return the favour, but the destiny she is burdened with is more than Subaru can imagine.

Strange murders are happening in Tokyo. Due to liquid evidence at the scene, the police conclude the attacks are the results of "eater" type ghouls.
