What were all three of the relationships like? Did you attempt to continue with the others after the one ruined it?

You clearly misunderstood. What they were referring to was the idea that if you have two children, would love each of them less over just having one? Ergo, if you had two partners, would you love one less than just having the one? Is love a commodity that's divisible? Do you love others less to love someone more?
