Anyone remember when they learned what an Otaku was?

I saw another post that asked what anime turned you into an otaku. For me I can't point to any one show since I loved everything that was on Toonami and Fox Kids (later rebranded Fox Box, then 4Kids, I don't know what they call it now) as a kid. I think what happened with me is that I learned what an otaku was somewhere in my late pre-teens to early teens and immediately knew I was one. Funny thing is I can't remember the exact moment when I learned what an otaku was. Anyone else remember when they learned what an otaku was?

I remember that I felt relieved, I knew I was gonna be that till the day I died. I was happy calling me an otaku and I still do even though later on I discovered that the word in Japan has actually a negative meaning... But still I am

Yeah that saddens me. I wear the name otaku with a lot of pride. Makes me sad that the country of origin where its from doesn't have as much respect for it.

@vospader21 Don't be sad about it!!! At least we know what we are. Compare to some years ago, we are like everywhere!!! I remember thinking that there was something wrong with me. But at some point I discovered that is good to be me and not just another human being who is supposed to like this or that in order to belong to the huge accepted mass... I know where I belong and what it all implies. And above all the things that you may regret in life, this is the only one I will never regret!!!
