Sounds to me like it may have been a phobia for you, my issue is heights so I know how limiting it can be and how hard it is to get past them. ( I feel people who say "just expose yourself to the phobia to get past it" have no clue what they are talking about )

I have a pretty good idea of their power and strength, plus I have been bashed a few times, but no one intends to cause harm. ( Well, if you've earned their respect, otherwise my buys can be considered wild )
