Okay I might need help on this one

Okay I dont even know how to start. Long story short, I have a girlfriend. She asked me out on a date last week and then we went to the cinema and now..you know. BUT. I more and more notice that we have absolutely nothing in common. For example I have been trying to show her some anime and watch it with her but she doesnt understand how one can take animated things serious. I'm like...okay. But even her musioc taste is the exact contrary to mine. I listen to rock and metal while always prioritizing how good the melody of the song sounds, while she listens to techno and club music and only cares about the beat. I really cant have a conversation with her without having to disagree. Its not THAT bad thogh. She agrees that Twilight is a really bad movie and that justin bieber sucks. And she's really hot and all. The most disturbing thing tho is the following. Not only does she have no intention of ever studying martial arts, she asks me to stop or tone down my training because she hates violence...like..i mean...i hate violence too but fighting isnt violent. Its as if the hearts of two fighters meet each other when thex exchange fists..wheres the violence if both fighters are fired up ? BUT SHE FRICKEN DOESNT UNDERSTAND ME AT ALL. WHat do you guys think ? Will this relationship work ?

Try explaining that martial arts isn't about violence, but the complete opposite? Like in the Karate Kid, you learn so you don't have to fight. The music thing is probably easy to fix, just find something that bridges the gap between you two. If she puts a lot of emphasis on "prettiness" of the sound, check out: Alcest, namely their album Souvenirs D'un Autre Monde (post rock, black metal, very pretty) Choking Victim's album No Gods, No Managers if she wants something energetic and danceable (punk, ska) Death Cab For Cutie is always a favorite with the ladies. Check out The Photo Album or Transatlanticism (indie) Joy Division is amazing. Unknown Pleasures is an essential. Again, danceable, but somewhat dark/depressing at the same time (post-punk) Squarepusher might be something worth looking into as well. Very erratic, glitchy, awesome. Check out Go Plastic (Drum & bass, IDM). You might want to ease her into it, maybe with some Jpop but in English if you can find it and then get her into Miku or something? Message me if you want more recommendations XD Is she worth the effort? If she doesn't like The Chameleons or The Flaming Lips, she isn't worth it, but maybe that's just me XD

I really dont have enough time to listen to all those bands today but I think ive heard of some.. Anyways thanks for the reply. I really tried to explain to her how martial arts is my life Countless Times. It always ends up with her usual argument: Hurting others is bad. About whether she's worth it or not..Thats a good question. After all she knows just as much as I do that we have no common interests but she still hangs out with me and looks at me with that look as if I mean a lot to her. In other words I am the asshole having doubts and she most likely likes me despite all the differences. Too...freaking...complicated....MY BRAIN NOOOOOOOOOOO IT WILL EXPLODE OHHHH NOoooooooooo

I abhor violence too but I hold a red belt in Taekwondo lol. It's great fun, good exercise and it's a practical art. There's a big difference between fighting to defend something and violence. Plus, learning to fight is only part of martial arts. There's also the mental and spiritual aspects to consider.

Of course. Most people dont even participate in real fights and only do that as some kind of sports, which is good too.

But anyway, it's definitely a difficult problem and I don't want to trivialize it, but if I were in the situation I would probably talk with her and see where it goes. If you find out you're too incompatible then you're not losing too much, but who knows. Best not to have regrets, eh?

Well caring about someone means that you accept everything about them unconditionally. Unless they are hurting themselves in any way but other than that, she should accept your ways and what you are into and learn to live with it. And if she's a considerate person she would even give things you like a chance. Same for you with her. But that's just the way my mind thinks. It's called unconditional love :) Opposites sometimes attract. It's not always good to have everything in common. But you guys should explore more things about each other and find something you both enjoy. That way when you guys have a disagreement you can easily change the subject to the things you both like. If that's impossible then the effort shows that you care as well so just give it a shot. Good luck btw.

She doesn't really know you, then. If she loved you, or liked you - either or She shouldn't be trying to change you into this 'idea' that isn't you. Like you for who you are, good & bad - respect your interests. Shit like that. I think it could last, yeah. For a while - most things do. You never know, she 'could' be the one. After all, that's what dating's for isn't it? Explore each others interest and try and pave some common ground, if possible with an open mind. Give things a chance. There could be much more to her than meets the eye, just as you are my good dragon. Fantasy inter-race pairings are a little uncommon but hey, it's all good. If you're ready for some commitment go for it - but be sure of it. Be true to yourself as an individual and make comprises if need it be, but don't let it change who you are unless you welcome that change. Give it a shot, don't measure the value of it and just roll with it. My two cents.
