What's your thoughts on much older otaku (like/dislike, date, scared of:)?

I don't think an old Otaku should fade away. I'm going to be 30 this year and I some what feel the same about anime. My taste may have changed, especially when it comes to storyies about high school kids. I really don't like to watch stuff like that. I don't think they are weird but I do believe if that person cosplays a younger character then it's kinda weird. I hope to cosplay before I get older. I dunno to each its own, I guess. I would only date someone 5 yrs older then me, that;s the limit.

Interaction between otaku generations has changed much over the last 15 years, mostly due to the availability and variety of anime IMO. Before that it was not surprising to go to an anime club meet and see the "old" otaku form a clique apart from the "young" or just new members. Inevitably the older group would start talking about how they were into anime before the young ones were born, or how the new fans don't understand anything about Rumiko Takahashi's or Miazaki's works, the "subtle nuances" of Gundam compared to Star Trek, or that Dirty Pair was just "stroke material" to them, and much much more. Essentially 30 and 40-something hipsters. The few older female otaku back then ran one of two flavors; rabid fangirl, or bitter and resentful of anime women and let you know it. Today the younger fans from the 80's and 90's are now the old crowd, and the cloistered otaku from back then have faded to obscurity, relegated to the occasional "what ever happened to" discussions while those that looked at the new blood as a chance to introduce more people to a greater acceptance of anime are still out there and generally contribute to the scene as a whole. Today's older otaku have raised children into the fandom, bringing them to cons and supporting their cosplay efforts, and in some cases started anime based businesses. Would I date an older otaku today, yes, although I kinda missed out on the opportunity from the last con because I didn't think to get her contact info, lol.

I have no issues, but it's all in how you interact with people. So what if you like anime and aren't a child, teen or early twenties? It's just entertainment. I think as you get older, it gets harder to find others with an interest in anime.... I had to stop mid sentence to ask you, the Op, a question. Why specifically do you ask? Are you looking for a young woman? It's threads like these that I see as fishing. You throw out a hook with the bait that will attract what you want and then you wait to see what you catch. At your age, a question like this should be fairly simple to answer on your own using a little common sense. Do you find it odd when a fifty something dates a twenty something? Again, a touch of common sense goes a long way. Personally, it's not liking anime that'd make you odd, it's you're approach.

Realistically speaking, it's hard to be an older (single) otaku without coming off seemingly a bit pervy. More so on a dating site. Since I doubt anyone has created a 30+ yrs old otaku dating site. Also, most of the females here are around 25 and younger, so that's the main dating pool. A few are older, but not many and not many that are single. So regardless of ones age, most of the single and available people are going to be young. Also, something you may not realize when you are younger and more naive; What age of females (or males) that one finds attractive has nothing to do with your own age. A hot 18 year old girl (for example) is still a hot 18yr old regardless of whether I'm 18 or 35 or 75. The fact that we happen to age is irrelevant to our desires. Now, I'm personally not opposed to dating a girl around my age, however none that I've met share much of my interests in music or culture or anime. Also it's much harder to find anyone single. Most of the girls I've met here and talked to for potential dating happen to be in their early 20s. Because of my age the cultural view of my dating women in that age group is a bit borderline already and I would be looked at as a total perv if I was much older. So I see why people have certain points of view. Though I don't see anything "wrong" with a much older guy dating younger girls (who are 18+) if such girls are willing. But guys should realize that the cultural view is not favorable, particularly once they get into their 40s and up and the girls they date, or attempt to date, are around half their age.

Or if they send friend requests to 16yr olds... Just saying. I call it as I see it and I personally see red flags, whether I'm wrong or right.

Even setting aside how the prevailing culture may look at such relationships, realistically it's a temporary situation at best. Generally men and women in their mid-twenties are still finding their way in life and will change how they view a much older partner in as little as a year. By the time they hit 30 the younger partner usually has a very different idea on the sort of age gap they would be interested in. In other cases the older half is looking for someone with similar or at least relatable life experiences. In the rare instances that a "May/December" romance surviving everything else is because a large inheritance is the motivator.

^A tad bit cynical but generally yes, someone on the younger side is still developing their worldview and their outlook on life can change drastically in a short time. However, that is why I look for partners that are more intelligent and especially mature, particularly if they are younger. I don't agree that large age gap relationships, that only rarely succeed, are motivated mostly by money. Some are sure, but I've met many happy couple with 10-15yrs or more age difference, some married. Some younger girls that are more intelligent and mature than many others their age, appreciate the mature emotional stability and experience of an older partner.

And yet, you say in another thread that(to paraphrase) most women around you only want money and to pop out babies. Meh... I think this is going in a direction that the op did not intend...meh...such is the way of the internet.
vampire_neko
^Exactly, which is why I'm not interested in most girls I see, hence why I'm here. The girls here are often much different from most girls I meet irl.
