So is NEET basically unemployed? Or is it something else?

lucille, you're thinking of hikomori. Most real hikomori tend to be NEET and it's not uncommon the other way around as well but the two aren't exactly synonyms even if most of the time one tends to also be the other. A hikomori can have a stay at home job for example while a NEET can be out going. simply put, a hikomori is what western societies would refer to as a shut in. Someone who has shut themselves away from the outside world for whatever reason. NEET could be considered basically unemployed as Manga_bird said, but being NEET has more to do with the complete lack of interest in working or training for anything. A NEET isn't someone who's struggling to find a job, a NEET is someone who doesn't want a job. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fxfh5jOHv8A

Welcome to the NHK is a fantastic anime that I can relate to in a lot of ways (If I met a girl like Misaki I'd totally marry her fyi). I'm not a NEET/ Hikomori now but I did go through a period where I was. I can honestly say that work was the best thing that ever happened to me. I have so much more confidence now.
