Visual Novel Discussion

shadowhawkz
So I posted the same topic in the video game forums but didn't get any replies, maybe this is better suited to the anime section? Anyway, Hello! I made this topic to maybe meet people who share a passion about visual novels like I do. What are your favorite visual novels? Also, do you think that with Clannad coming to steam later this year, we could see a big increase in the popularity of visual novels here in the west? I think it is a very real possibility that it could lead to more developers bringing their masterpieces over! As for my favorite ones, they would be Clannad, Katawa Shoujo, If My Heart Had Wings, Little Busters, And the Ace Attorney series.

WHHHAAAT? What about CLANNAD? My favorite anime. Give me the scoop. Also, about VN, I'm not into that. Sorry man. :/
shadowhawkz
Well Clannad was originally a visual novel before it became an anime, and recently it was announced that the VN is coming to steam.

How many visual novels have been released in English and what is the price range?
shadowhawkz
Not very many have come to steam, you can simply type in visual novel if you want to look at the ones on steam, but none of them are above $20 i think.

Sekien no Inganock as well as Shikkoku no Sharnoth would have to be my favorites, mostly due to the atmosphere and storyline. Besides that, I have dabbled with Wanko to Kurasou and Koihime Musou. Would like to try Yosuga no Sora, but I'm not entirely sure whether or not the translation patch is finished yet. Personally however, I wouldn't purchase a visual novel on steam. Not that I don't like it of course, but if you really want to support the creators, you'd be better off ordering an original Japanese copy followed by torrenting a version with the English patch. By going via steam, you give more money to the localization company, than the publisher.
shadowhawkz
That is a good point, but even so, supporting the localization companies will show that there is a market for VN over here in the first place, and it could lead to more localizations in the future.

Steam is the best way to, since they are translated.
