Fukushima nuclear disaster

saber
This may not be mentioned often enough in mainstream news, but the Fukushima/Daiichi TEPCO plant's situation is turning more and more like a slow-motion disaster of nightmarish proportions... Many tons of highly radioactive water have been leaking from the damaged reactors. Thyroid cancer has seen a sharp increase in this that area of Japan and can only get worse from here. It's probably better that most of this radioactive waste is getting out into the Pacific rather than directly to the population of Japan. But what will all of this Cesium-137 and other elements do to the marine life? And could this impact the West Coast of the US? I think it very well may. I will keep this thread regularly updated with news items relating to this incident. Also, how bad do you think it'll get if there's another earthquake/tsunami and reactors 3 and 4 meltdown? It's questions like these that sometimes keep me up at night.

I'm not eating fish or seafood for awhile :c

Silver Lining? You mean dark cluster fuck cloud right? because my whole job revolves around the marine life of alaska's gulf coast, you know the area that generally has the highest probability of getting hit first by all that radioactive waste. I know that California's gulf coast has already seen a little bit of waste reach them but I'm not sure how the oceanic currents were working last year, everything might have just skimmed past the gulf of alaska(hopefully). I know for a fact that all the fisherman and canneries are keeping a close watch on the catch and they've been introducing new inspection elements to see wether or not any of the salmon we catch has been contaminated but if worse comes to worse and they find contamination it will utterly destroy the fishing industry in alaska, and the economy of alaska. The asiatic community that buys a large portion of our exported fish will have to turn to different sources (if they can find any) which will most likely be more expensive just due to shipping prices, domino effecting a portion of their economies. I'm terrified of what might happen if there's contamination, and I'm terrified of the thought that there is STILL waste leaking out and that this issue hasn't been treated with more prominence. All I know is that there are around a million jobs on the line in alaska alone, mine and my families and friends included.

Record cesium levels at Pacific Ocean sampling location north of Fukushima plant — Spikes to 6,900 Bq/m³ from ‘not detected’ in one day http://enenews.com/record-cesium-levels-detected-ocean-fukushima-plant-spikes-6900-bqliter-detected-day-before

I have heard that 2yrs after said incident that people in California have received and gotten sick off of eating fish with nuclear containments from that. Being that I live in California honestly it does concern me but that being said...I can't stop eating sushi O_o I don't mind becoming the hulk with radioactive poisoning...it was japans fault for not notifying us and it was U.S.A's fault for not telling us when they found out. We have been screwed with a nuclear stick up our...But truth is what can we do? Entire oceans have been contaminated no matter who's fault it was, Can one or a group of people clean up such a mess? If possible then yes I will sign or help out in anyway possible but do you believe someone would do something?...That's the big question...best thing you can do is not eat fish...and buy Omega pills...Btw im against pill taking.

Hate to do this but I'll just plug a channel on youtube that covered the topic in several videos about the Fukushima plant and its effects on people, the environment, and how radiation works. His name is Thunderf00t here's the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S6Syv9arXqU http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zw33AVqzQxA

I want to have a serious conversation about this, but it feels like a few of you are missing the entire severity of the situation. The radioactive leakage and waste still exists. It's already scarred Fukushima, and because it has reached the ocean, the current has probably carried it outwards. Debris from Fukushima have reached the California coastline, so it is possible that radiation has also reached Hawaii and California. I believe we have been effected, but what we've recieved here is diluted. So if you think this is terrible, could you imagine what it's like for people in Fukushima? Also, something to consider. How can they neutralize the radioactive waste? You can't neutralize it, only store it. They are developing ways to neutralize it, but the process takes a long time, and also it's costly, and dangerous. Radioactive products stay radioactive for thousands of years. So this waste will have to be stored somewhere. They will have to consider where they can store the waste, and they actually considered storing it in the bottom of the ocean, which sounds like an awful idea. It's going to effect all of the ocean life surrounding it.

If I remember my current news right, scientists haven't even had a chance to study the effects of the radiation on the coastline cause it hasn't even reached here yet. The current calculations are that the levels are too low to harm both humans and the environment but they can't say for sure until they actually get data next month

And all our prime minister worries about is china and its drama. Go to work tepco. :| Hi all I don't know if anyone here can answer my questions. It would help if you can. Anyway, I live in Nagoya(pretty far from Fukushima area). I drink boiled tap water from the office. And use filtered water for cooking. Will that help in lessening the radioactive waste in the water I intake? How will I know if the water around Nagoya/Osaka has already been contaminated? They're really pretty quiet about this.

@xueli I looked into it a bit more, it's supposed to hit our coast in April. They have begun sampling kelp in San Diego. Hopefully they can see just how much radiation has travelled here. Anyway, my worry is really the lasting effect in Japan, we probably won't get hit hard and definitely won't get hit as hard as Japan. @jineko Well, the government in Japan is really not telling a lot about what has happened. It's really been that way for a long time, and I'm concerned because a lot of people are used to this. However, they need to speak up and make demands. It's going to take a long time for them to get to that point. Because you are in Nagoya you are a lot further from the area most affected by the tsunami and nuclear disaster. This means that you probably shouldn't have to worry as much. If I were you, I'd keep using my water filter, anyway.
