I'm curious

Why do we tend to hide ourselves from each other? I've seen plenty of times where *insert boy/girl* would ignore other otakus they see in public to try and act normal. Is it because they don't embrace that side to them at all? or is it that we are destined to be alone? Also most otakus (if lucky enough) attempt to date outside from each other and date someone who doesn't even care for anime or video games (if that's what they like). I guess I'm trying to ask why do we have these "public personalities" and are afraid to show our true selves to the world and those alike.

I personally embrace my otaku side. I walk in public with my Miku keychain and some anime shirts here and there, I even listen to some of the Jpop/rock songs I have in public. I haven't really experienced anything negative from it. I even ran into a group of girls who know who Miku was. I posted this because I ran into a guy not too long ago who was playing pokemon X/Y and I went over to him and asked him a question about it. he ignored me and told me to leave him alone. So I rubbed it off and went on my merry way. I also know of someone who is dating a guy who doesn't like anime and video games and hates her relationship because they really have no similar interests.
